Dave's Memories of the Ashgrove

Dave took these black and white pictures here at the Ashgrove with a camera he borrowed from his Dad around age 14 or 15. Dave says:

These are some fuzzy photographs I took when I was a kid (with a camera borrowed from my dad) at the old Ash Grove. My camera skills prove that it's probably a good thing I took up songwriting.

Johnny Shines - 1971
One of the masters of both acoustic Delta blues and electric Chicago blues as well as one of the most powerful vocalists in blues or any other type of music. I highly recommend the recent Hightone reissue, Skull And Crossbones Blues.
SCAN0040r.jpg
Michael Bloomfield - early '70s
One of the greatest of the 60's blues revival guitarists. Recorded and played with everyone from Dylan and Al Kooper to, well, Big Joe Turner and Eddie Vinson, who he was backing up the night this photo was taken. An absolutely fearless guitarist who died tragically young.
SCAN0041.jpg
Johnny "Guitar" Watson - early '70s
One of my biggest heroes. Taken the same night as the Reverend Gary Davis picture. Wow! What a double bill! Davis' acoustic gospel/blues fingerpicking meets Watson's electric blues/r+b, high energy, stinging and blasting guitar. Sort of a quick history of the blues in one show. Watson's music changed over the years from pure urban blues to disco but when he played guitar, no matter what kind of groove or beat, he was one of the most expressive funky blues guitar players ever.

Reverend Gray Davis - early '70s
One of the greatest guitar technicians in traditional American acoustic music, as well as a moving and soulful vocalist, Reverend Gary died not long after I took this photograph. His gospel/blues playing influenced everyone from Blind Boy Fuller to Doc Watson and Bob Dylan, and I feel blessed to have sat at his feet for a little while one night many years ago.
SCAN0043r.jpg
Junior Wells - early '70s
One of the kings of Chicago blues harmonica and a tough, no nonsense singer. Taken the same night as the Buddy Guy photo, near the end of their long, love/hate musical partnership. I'm glad I got to see them together before they went they're separate ways.

Buddy Guy - early '70s
What can you say about guitar god Buddy Guy that hasn't already been said? The only thing I'll add here is that his CD, Sweet Tea, is one of my favorite recordings in recent years. He can still destroy any guitar player unlucky enough to challenge him. Just ask Eric Clapton.

Eddie "Cleanhead Vinson" - New Year's Eve 1970/1971
An amazing show with Eddie and Big Joe Turner along with the Johnny Otis Orchestra. Eddie Vinson was a great jump blues singer/alto sax player with a personality unlike anyone else's. Big Joe and Eddie together . . . Happy New Year indeed!

Dave and Sam Phillips
This is me with Sun Records founder/genius Sam Phillips. To make the photo even more amazing, the photo was taken by Sun Records artist, Sonny Burgess at a private party a few years ago that I played with Sonny. Sam was very complimentary of my guitar playing (Once I knew he was there watching us play, well, I threw in every Sun Records lick I know from Roland Janes and Scotty Moore to Pat Hare and WIllie Johnson and even played a few I didn't know I knew) and his kind words made this one of the greatest evenings of my life.
